Day 1 of the seller challenge is about the shop.
My Etsy shop is still relatively new, I only opened it four months ago. I thought a long time about whether I should offer my paintings for sale at all, but it was my dream for many years, to be honest.
At the moment, I am in the very fortunate situation that I do not have to make that much money that it equals a full-time salary. From a financial point of view, it is okay for now, if the sales start slowly.
But whoever thinks, one could have a regular job, and then paint a little in their spare time, has no idea, how much work it is, to have an online shop and to do everything yourself. Besides painting, it is also marketing, administration and accounting, the legal aspects (especially if you want to sell internationally), shipment (a story on its own!) etc.
I am not familiar with the situation for other products, but as an artist one always has a lot of competition. Many people make art, pretty and unique art, and want to sell it. Therefore, the most important goal is to be seen by as many potentially customers as possible, until one has achieved a certain reputation. And that requires a lot of time and attention.
In some weeks I am more involved with marketing and administration, than with painting, but I think it’s pretty fun. I am very grateful that I have the opportunity to do this at all, and try to get the most out of my time every day.
