For the longest time I wanted to paint an iris. Firstly, I think it is a very beautiful flower, especially with the many variations in shape and color. Secondly, my sister’s first name happens to be Iris. And finally, I came across a photo (not of an iris), where dark purple was combines with yellow, which I liked very much, and another photo of a purple colored iris. That was all that I needed, to finally get started.

Green and yellow in the background represent the grass, the stems and the leaves of the plants, and a sunny day with bright light. Together they are the perfect background for the dark purple flowers of the iris. The color is almost blue in the shadows, whereas in the light it is mauve. The buds have a dark red color, which forms a beautiful and subtle connection between yellow and purple.

Together the colors form am beautiful whole, with gorgeous complementary contrasts, making the artwork particularly well suited for a room with lots of neutral colors, where it will be a real eye-catcher.

Acrylics on stretched canvas, 15.8 x 19.7 in (40 x 50 cm).
